Language Requirements
To study in New Zealand, international students must demonstrate proficiency in the English language, as most universities and institutes teach in English. The most widely accepted test is IELTS, where a minimum overall score of 6.0 to 6.5 is generally required for undergraduate and postgraduate programs. Some institutions may also accept TOEFL, PTE Academic, or Cambridge English qualifications. For diploma or certificate programs, the requirement may be slightly lower, usually around 5.5 to 6.0. However, competitive courses such as medicine, law, or engineering may set higher benchmarks. Students who do not meet the minimum requirement can enroll in English language pathway programs offered by many New Zealand institutions before starting their main course. Meeting these requirements ensures that students can actively participate in lectures, complete assignments, and succeed academically. Strong English skills also help international students integrate better into New Zealand’s multicultural society.

Visa Requirements

These visas require applicants to meet certain conditions, including having a clear business plan, sufficient investment funds, good health and character, and English language proficiency. Accommodation is usually the biggest cost, ranging between NZD 800 and 1,500 per month, depending on whether you live in university halls, shared flats, or private rentals. Food and groceries typically cost NZD 200–400 per month, with additional expenses for eating out. Utilities such as electricity, water, heating, and internet add around NZD 100–200 monthly, while public transportation costs average NZD 100–150 per month, with discounts often available for students. Other expenses, including mobile phone plans, entertainment, and study materials, may add another NZD 100–200 monthly.
